Six days, day by day.

Mornings on the rails along the Cantabrian coast. Afternoons ashore — a cheese cave above Cabrales, a fishing village in Asturias, a quiet square in Llanes. Evenings, dinner on the train. Choose the direction that suits you.

Day I · Saturday

Bilbao → Santander

Boarding, Guggenheim, the run to Santander.

Reception at 10:00 at Bilbao-Concordia station. Cabin assignment. Panoramic tour of Bilbao including the Guggenheim. Lunch onboard as the train heads west. Afternoon in Santander; dinner ashore; overnight at the station.

DAY II · SANTANDER → LLANES

Day II · Sunday

Santander → Llanes

Santillana del Mar and the neo-cave of Altamira.

Breakfast onboard to Cabezón de la Sal. Coach to medieval Santillana del Mar and the neo-cave of Altamira. Lunch onboard as the train crosses into Asturias to Llanes. Walking tour; dinner aboard; overnight Llanes.

Day III · Monday

Llanes → Oviedo

Arenas de Cabrales and the cheese caves.

Coach into the Picos de Europa to Arenas de Cabrales. Cheese Cave-Museum (Cabrales is cave-aged, opened with a knife rather than a wire). Lunch onboard to Oviedo: pre-Romanesque churches, narrow streets, Princess of Asturias host city. Dinner and overnight Oviedo.

Day IV · Tuesday

Oviedo → Luarca

Gijón by the sea, Luarca by evening.

Coach to Gijón, working coastal city with a long beach and wide promenade. Free time, long lunch. Train to Luarca, the “White Town of the Green Coast”. Dinner onboard; overnight Luarca.

Day V · Wednesday

Luarca → Viveiro

Ribadeo, Taramundi, and the Os Teixois mills.

Breakfast onboard into Galicia to Ribadeo. Coach to Taramundi; the ethnographic complex of Os Teixois preserves the watermills and knife forges of pre-industrial Asturias. Lunch in the village. Train to Viveiro; dinner aboard; overnight in Viveiro.

Day VI · Thursday

Viveiro → Santiago de Compostela

Ferrol, the Cathedral, the Parador.

Breakfast onboard to Ferrol. Farewells to the crew. Coach to Santiago de Compostela — the end of the Camino. Cathedral and old town walk. Farewell lunch at the Parador de los Reyes Católicos.

Day I · Saturday

Santiago de Compostela → Ferrol

The Cathedral, the Parador, and east to Ferrol.

Reception at 10:00 at Santiago de Compostela station. Cabin assignment. City tour and Cathedral visit. Welcome lunch at the Parador de los Reyes Católicos. Coach and train east to Ferrol. Dinner and overnight in Ferrol.

Ferrol → Luarca

Os Teixois mills and into Asturias.

Breakfast onboard along the Galician coast to Ribadeo. Coach to Taramundi for Os Teixois — watermills, forges, and a knife museum. Lunch in the village. Train east to Luarca; walking tour; dinner aboard; overnight Luarca.

Luarca → Oviedo

Gijón by the sea, Oviedo by evening.

Breakfast onboard, coach to Gijón. Walking tour of the seafront, free time, long lunch. Train to Oviedo: pre-Romanesque churches, narrow streets, the Princess of Asturias host city. Dinner and overnight Oviedo.

Oviedo → Llanes

Arenas de Cabrales and the Picos de Europa.

Coach into the Picos de Europa to Arenas de Cabrales. The Cabrales Cheese Cave-Museum is a working operation; the cheese is cave-aged and opened with a knife rather than a wire. Lunch in the Cabrales valley. Train to Llanes — harbour town, slate roofs, painted cobbles. Dinner aboard; overnight Llanes.

Llanes → Santander

Santillana del Mar and the neo-cave of Altamira.

Breakfast onboard west along the coast. Coach to medieval Santillana del Mar, cobbled town that looks painted. Visit to the neo-cave of Altamira. Lunch. Train to Santander; seafront walk; dinner ashore; overnight at the station.

Santander → Bilbao

The Guggenheim, and the end of the line.

Breakfast onboard along the run east to Bilbao-Concordia. Bilbao city tour with the Guggenheim Museum as the centrepiece. Farewell lunch and disembarkation in Bilbao. End of the journey.
