Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela
Bilbao — Santander
Embark at Bilbao's historic La Concordia station at 10am. A panoramic city tour takes in Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum and the old town before the journey continues west to Santander, the elegant Belle Époque capital of Cantabria on its great bay. Dinner is at a prestigious Santander restaurant. Overnight in Santander.
Santander — Santillana del Mar & Altamira — Llanes
After breakfast the train rolls to Cabezón de la Sal, where a coach carries you to the perfectly preserved medieval village of Santillana del Mar and the Neocave of Altamira, the museum recreation of the 'Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art'. Lunch is served onboard before arriving in the Asturian seaside town of Llanes. Dinner and overnight in Llanes.
Llanes — Picos de Europa & Cabrales — Oviedo
A coach climbs into the Picos de Europa to Arenas de Cabrales for the Cabrales cheese cave-museum, where the famous blue cheese matures in natural mountain caves. The train then runs to Oviedo — the pre-Romanesque capital of Asturias and a UNESCO treasure — with a guided city tour and live entertainment aboard in the evening. Overnight in Oviedo.
Oviedo — Gijón — Luarca
The morning is spent in seafront Gijón, with free time and lunch in its traditional restaurants and sidrerías, where cider is poured from high overhead. In the afternoon the train continues west along the coast to Luarca, the 'white town of the green coast', for a visit and dinner aboard. Overnight in Luarca.
Luarca — Ribadeo & Taramundi — Viveiro
Crossing into Galicia, the train stops at Ribadeo before a coach excursion to the mountain village of Taramundi and the Os Teixois ethnographic complex — water-powered forges and mills still in use — with a typical local lunch. The day ends with a visit to the Galician town of Viveiro, dinner and the night aboard. Overnight in Viveiro.
Viveiro — Ferrol — Santiago de Compostela
A final breakfast aboard as the train reaches Ferrol, where a coach takes you to Santiago de Compostela. A guided visit to the great cathedral and the UNESCO old town precedes a farewell lunch at the Parador Reyes Católicos — one of the oldest hotels in the world — concluding the journey around 4pm.
