You do not need an architecture degree to enjoy this route — but knowing five stories in advance turns façades into drama. These are the ones our guides tell best.

Oviedo's impossible churches

In the 800s, while Europe built squat and dark, the tiny Asturian kingdom raised churches of startling lightness on the hills above Oviedo. UNESCO calls them pre-Romanesque; our guides call them the boldest buildings of their century anywhere.

The indiano mansions

Scattered along the coast stand flamboyant villas with palm trees in their gardens — built by emigrants who made fortunes in Cuba and Mexico and came home determined that everyone should know it. Luarca and Ribadeo keep splendid examples; the palm tree was the signature.

Gaudí's northern postcard and Bilbao's comeback

Cantabria hides one of Gaudí's rare works outside Catalonia, and Bilbao owns the era-defining comeback story: a rusting port reborn around Gehry's titanium Guggenheim.

The granite finale

Santiago's cathedral square may be Spain's greatest architectural room — best at dusk, as the Santiago guide recommends. Place every building on the map with the complete route guide, or catch them all through a lens with the photographer's guide.
