Both the Costa Verde Express and El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo travel the spectacular 'Green Spain' coast on the same narrow-gauge network. They are sister experiences, and the Costa Verde Express in fact succeeded the retired 'classic' Transcantábrico. Here is how to choose.
Length & route
The Costa Verde Express runs a 6-day, 5-night journey between Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela, in both directions. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo runs a longer 8-day route between San Sebastián and Santiago, adding the Basque coast and more of Cantabria.
Space & price
The Gran Lujo's 14 Grand Deluxe Suites are among the largest on any train, at a premium price. The Costa Verde Express offers 24 comfortable Gran Clase Suites (46 guests) from about €5,000 per person — accessible luxury, a little more intimate per square metre.
Which is right for you?
Choose the Costa Verde Express for a shorter, beautifully paced six days at a friendlier price. Choose the Gran Lujo for the longest route and the most spacious suites. The landscapes — Picos de Europa, Covadonga, the Playa de las Catedrales — are shared by both.
As the official authorized source for both trains, we can match you to the right one.
